Aprovecho Research Centre, Southern Africa, Rocket Stoves – Ashden Award winner Video

To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog ashdenawards.blogspot.com The Aprovecho Research Centre has assisted the Programme for Biomass Energy Conservation in Southern Africa (ProBEC) in designing biomass stoves for institutional cooking in Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. Over 1500 institutional stoves have been produced and sold by entrepreneurs. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. There is a huge problem of de-forestation, partly as a result of the high population density and also because large areas of land are taken up with cash crops such as tobacco and tea, which also use enormous amounts of wood for processing. Fuelwood and charcoal are the main fuels for cooking both in homes and institutions in rural areas. In each country ProBEC has involved entrepreneurs in training workshops, where a woodstove of suitable efficiency for each country is developed and engineered with the assistance of an Aprovecho Research Consultant. The stoves are targeted at large institutions, such as schools, prisons and tea-estate kitchens, and use the Aprovecho ‘Rocket’ combustion approach to give high combustion efficiency and efficient heat transfer to the cooking pot. Practical experience suggests that using the stove saves at least 50% of fuelwood, sometimes more, which can give significant

Questions

Ireland has a renewable energy company. I think the name Haus is in it. Do y’all know what I’m referring to?

I stumbled upon a site for a renewable energy, alternative energy plant in Ireland, it looked interesting & I was about to read it when I was interrupted. When I came back my wee bundle of joy had Sonic, (the obnoxious rodent) up on the screen & my Ireland article was gone. *so sad* Does anyone know what I was reading or referring to? Sorry my description is so vague.

I know theres a company called Griffner Haus in ireland that has something to do with energy and conservation.

Also, did you check your browser history?

Questions

What are three renewable alternative energy sources?

I need help on this. When u answer can u be thorough about why the 3 alternative energy sources are renewable please.

Answer by Dave
Wind, solar and tidal (or wave) power.

They are considered renewable because no matter how much wind or sunlight or how many waves you use, you’ll never consume it all. Petroleum products like oil and natural gas are not renewable because there is a finite amount of it in the ground. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

It may not be windy, sunny or wavy every day, but there’ll always be more.

Questions

Can gravity ever be used as a renewable energy?

can gravity ever be used as a renewable energy. is there any known way of harnessing gravity in a way which gives you more energy then you started with? Thanks

Answers

Answer by Robert
No, because to put potential energy into an object with gravity, you have to expend energy. There is no way to harness more energy from gravity than you put into it (this breaks the laws of physics, anyway). Theoretically, we could harness all the gravitational energy in the world by tearing down the elevations and using the falling dirt and stone until the entire earth is flat.

Renewable energy is a misconception – it’s not an infinite source of energy, rather, renewable energy on earth is just readily available energy that comes from the sun (which, ironically, isn’t a renewable resource!)

Kisangani Smith Group, Tanzanian stoves burn sawdust – Ashden Award winner Video

This video can be downloaded here: www.ashdenawards.org Kisangani Smith Group won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2008. To find out more visit the link above and check out the Ashden Awards Blog ashdenawards.blogspot.com To complement its work in training blacksmiths and in reforestation, the Kisangani Smith Group has developed two types of efficient biomass stove which can be hand-made by local smiths. One stove replaces the widespread use of charcoal in towns it burns sawdust (readily available as a waste in the Njombe region of Tanzania) or agricultural residues. The other stove is an improved wood-burner, targeted at rural areas. Over 3500 stoves have been sold by the Kisangani Smith Group and its trainees. The group plans to promote the stoves more widely, in Njombe and elsewhere, whilst expanding its training programme.

Questions

If you could buy clean, renewable energy from your utility, would you? And how much cost increase is too much?

There are many utilities in the USA that now offer you the option to buy clean, renewable energy from Wind, Solar, Geothermal and Biomass instead of the normal Coal, Nuclear, Natural Gas, Hydro and Petroleum. If you had this option, would you choose it? Why or why not? And how much is to much of an increase for it?

Questions

how can renewable energy stop the bubble conomics?

i listened to obama today about the new bill being passed to “help” build new jobs. Even though more people will most likely lose jobs. But what i’m confused on is he said that moving towards renewable energy will help in stopping the bubble and burst economics we are in.

Can someone explain to me how bubble economics, which is a result of planned economics (aka the federal reserve), has anything to do with renewable energy?

Answers

Answer by Thom
I think what he means is that if we have a reliable and plentiful source of renewable energy we can insulate ourselves from the affects of the crude oil (and other types of energy) bubbles (which undoubtedly exist, especially with the types of fundamentals we have nowadays in energy markets). Energy is an input to just about everything we consume, so controlling those costs (and at least making them more predictable) would be a big help. Nevertheless it’s a total pipe dream in the short run. I’d say maybe in 50 years or more we won’t be as dependent on oil. And I’m confident in saying that becaue neither the technology, scale nor the infrastructure for alternative energies even exists. And those things take many years to build up.

If Obama was really serious about avoiding bubbles he’d allow us to produce more oil right here at home. He’s not serious though, he’s a politician who is playing political games.
